Traditional fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, contribute most to the sustainable economic development of industrial sectors in the past few decades. The negative environmental and economic impacts, however, should be considered since fossil fuels will trigger CO2 emission problems, which are the main contributors to climate change. In order to cope with the energy and environment crisis, Low/Zero Carbon Energy is becoming more and more popular, such as zero-carbon vehicles and power generation technologies are becoming the hot spots in both industry and academia. In this webinar, we are fortunate to have several renowned experts who will discuss their research on Low/Zero carbon technologies in different fields. We welcome them and welcome the Low/Zero carbon future.

Prof. Dr. Wenbin Yu is a Full Professor at the School of Energy and Power Engineering, Shandong University, China. Before this, he worked as a Senior Research Fellow at the National University of Singapore for 7 years. He mainly focuses on new energy vehicles, electronic control for engines, fluid dynamics and CFD modeling, etc. He is now the Associate Editor of SAE International Journal of Engines, the Handling Editor of SAE Technical Paper, Chief Editor of Designs Section: Mechanical Engineering Design and Editorial Board Member of Energies.

Dr. Mojtaba Mirzaeian is an Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering in the School of Computing, Engineering, and Physical Sciences at the University of the West of Scotland (UK) and a Visiting Professor at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Almaty, Kazakhstan. His area of expertise is in the development of functional materials for a variety of engineering applications including materials for energy storage; materials for hydrogen storage; development of electrochemical energy storage technologies (particularly supercapacitor and Li/O2 battery); industrial energy management; and CO2 sequestration/shale gas fracking. His work in these areas has led to more than 120 peer- reviewed publications, several industrial and government research funding through KTP/consultancy and research funding applications and also world-wide collaborations with other institutes (in UAS, Iran; Russia; Bulgaria; Kazakhstan; and Turkey, ...). He is the Chief Editor of “Batteries, Supercapacitors, Fuel Cells and Combined Energy/Power Supply Systems” Topic (MDPI), Lead Editor of the Special Issue on “High Energy Supercapacitors” in the Journal of Energies (MDPI); and Lead Editor of the Special Issue on “Recent Advancements in Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) Technology and Its Processes” in the Journal of Energies (MDPI).
Emmanouil Rigas holds a BSc degree from the Department of Informatics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2011), an MSc with distinction in Web Technology from the University of Southampton, UK (2012) and a PhD from the Department of Informatics at AUTh (2018). During his PhD studies he specialized in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and specifically in optimization techniques, heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms, multi-agent systems and the semantic web and he applied his research in the area of Electric Vehicles. He continues this research until today. In 2019 he joined the University of Cyprus, initially as a research associate at the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence where he studied the use of AI in drones, and later as a special teaching scientist at the Department of Computer Science where he taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses. He has (co-) authored several papers published in prestigious journals and conferences and has participated in several national and European research projects. He has chaired sessions in IEEE ITSC'15 and in AAMAS'22. For his achievements he has received scholarships from AUTh's research committee and the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY).

Dr. Xiaohu Yang is a full Professor and Vice Dean of the Department of Architecture, Xi’an Jiaotong University. He has rich research interests covering the broad range of transport phenomena in porous media, thermal energy storage system, solar-driven cold and heat storage for energy-saving buildings, 4E analysis for energy system. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed journal papers and more than 100 international/national conference proceeding papers. He serves as organizing committee member for several conferences, and delivered more than 40 presentations/invited talks at international conferences and universities. He is now the Member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), International Society for Porous Media (InterPore), and International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM). He serves the Subject Editor for Advanced in Applied Energy, Associate Editor for Frontiers in Energy Research and Frontiers in Thermal Engineering, and Editorial Board Members for Energies, Energy and Built Environment. He has received Best Poster Award at 5th ASME Micro/Nanoscale Heat and Mass Transfer International Conference, Highly Cited Research Paper Award by Applied Energy Journal, outstanding reviewers by several international journals.
Currently, Dr. Hengyu Guo is a tenure-track professor in the School of Physics, Chongqing University. He has worked as a postdoc. in Georgia Tech at Prof. Zhong Lin Wang’s group. He mainly focuses on Nano/micro mechanical energy conversion technology. He has published more than 130 articles and 11 patents. His total citation is 13000 and h index is 63. He is now a member of the Editorial Board for Energies.
Sipeng Zhu is a Professor in the Department of Energy and Power Engineering of the Shandong University, China. Before he joined Shandong University, he worked as a Research Associate in the University of Bath from 2017 to 2020. His research focuses on the low carbon and zero carbon internal combustion engines with special interests including waste heat recovery, turbocharging, combustion, and thermal management.

On Tuesday, 12 July 2022, MDPI and the Journal Topics organized the first part of a two-part webinar, entitled "Low/Zero Carbon Energy - Part 1". The five contributions presented in this webinar studied different aspects of Low/Zero Carbon technologies: Energy storage, Carbon sequestration, Electric vehicles, Solar energy, Triboelectric nanogenerator, and Waste heat recovering for engines. It has been shown that more new technologies will bring earth shaking innovations to carbon reduction. The carbon-free lifestyle will be very promising in the future. The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair.
